Kyudo is called the way of the bow. It is listed as one of the oldest martial arts of Japan. It is seriously hard. It looks so passive and calm, but it is 80 % internal training in a way like Tai Chi, somewhat like Qi Gong. Controlling every movement, every breath, sending the arrow to the target, without any seemingly effort. Deceptive like Tai Chi, deadly as a Gun , meditatively peaceful as Zen, Yet The thought is One arrow, One life!.

In April of 2010 there will be the First Kyudo World Cup held in Tokyo Japan. There are very very very few Afriamericans involved in Kyudo. There is only One Black male in the world ranked Go-Dan ( fifth degree Black belt) by Japan. He is American. The only other Black in his league is a sister in France.
Also known as Zen Archery, Kyudo is a high level art which is unexplored by the Children of Africa. Read more about it here:

Thanks Zen, I am starting to gain a greater appreciation for martial arts. As I stated in a previous post, I'm narrowing my discipline of choice down to one of three. 1) Arnis 2) Okinawan Kenpo 3) Moo Duk Kwan.

We'll see
Excellent arts, I vote more for Arnis, since I do Kali :-)

But it is really about what works for you, how you feel about the training, and doing the training
peace
Here's one of the best at work. He achieved the rank of Grand Master and his father is considered a God in the art form.

Yeah, Love Arnis. The empty hand is so much like Mantis
I recall my teacher studied some with his father
That's awesome stuff. Thanks for the vid. I also like Moo Duk Kwan

Zen, do you have a ranking system for this discipline? Like belts?
There is the tradition ranking system in Kyudo, depending on the style. The former style I studied has no ranking. Like in Kung Fu rank was not important, You know it or you know it not. The current style under the Japanese Federation has ranks. I will be going to Tokyo this yr to test for Sho-Dan.
Best of luck. Sounds like some serious stuff. By the way in the pictures there were two brothers, are you one of them? Just asking.
