I applaud the many countries stepping up to the plate to help this country. They need all the help in the world right now. In looking at the news footage, I don't recall ever seeing something this bad, maybe Indonesia.

Horrific human challenge here. I just saw a CNN clip of a little girl pulled alive from a toppled building. She appeared to be around 6 years old, the age of my daughter.

MFO...here's a few tips for providing needed help:

(1) Contact the Haitian community associations in your local area. These folks are in touch with family in Haiti and can give guidance about on-the-ground agencies that need our support and how to reach these agencies.

(2) Contact the humanitarian organization Care. I had the pleasure of briefly working overseas with Care's chief Dr. Helene Gayle (the former CDC director) on an AIDS project and I highly respect her commitment and competence in responding to these kinds of human challenges. http://www.care.org/emergency/haitiearthquake/index.asp

(3) Visit the TransAfrica website. This organization offers excellent insights on the political, social, and economic challenges facing the Haitian people, including the implications of this tragedy for the Obama administration's policies on Haitian deportation and immigration. http://www.transafricaforum.org/

Please send prayers and support to our Haitian sisters and brothers....
Thanks for the post, JP. This is absolutely horrible.
