In case you've been living in a cave over these past couple of days a most tragic event has occurred 400 miles off the coast of Brazil. An ill-fated Air France A-330 apparently blew apart in the air for reasons unknown. Without the black boxes (actually they're orange) they may never know the actual cause. Being somewhat of an aviation enthusiast, here is what I do know
1) The plane had to ferret its way through something called the intertropical convergence zone. This particularly vicious and towering thunderstorms are common this time of year and pilots rely on Doppler radar to move around these storms. No pilot in his right mind would go through this or any thunderstorm. Hence the reason for flight delays when there's weather out there. It should be important to note planes get struck by lightning several times a year and they are built to withstand or dissipate the shock of such an event.
2) In viewing the debris field and how its in two distinct parts it appears it was an in air break up, which is extremely rare in fact it only happens 2% of the time. Most lethal incidents happen either on take off or landing.
3) The break up occurred in what some experts think is 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) of water.
4) The Airbus A-330 is a "fly by wire" craft meaning there's no direct connection between the pilots physical use of equipment and the movement of the plane, in short when a pilot does something it electronically sends signals to the landing gear, etc. The A-330 is considered extremely safe and ultra modern, in fact this particular craft was only 4 years old, so structural problems are all but ruled out.
5) An automatic signal was the last they heard from the plane and that signal suggested that there was a loss of cabin pressure (crucial to maintaining altitude) and an almost complete electrical outage. This can be taken a couple of different ways, when in flight school one of the first things you are taught is to first AVIATE, NAVIGATE and lastly COMMUNICATE. My point being is if they were in trouble their first responsibility is to get out of trouble by flying the plane, then navigate or determine direction, lastly you communicate. So in the process of doing the first two there may not have been enough time to do the last. Scary stuff.
More than likely it took several mishaps to bring this craft down because they are extremely durable designed to withstand a lot.
